The bright side of the flames: recolonization of burned areas

Four KRCL-ers, Max Mazella, Dr. Mari Mazzamuto, Dr. Melissa Merrick, and Dr. John Koprowski, recently published a paper in Mammalian Biology showing how extensive and frequent fires in California can affect the western gray squirrel presence and distribution. They found that in 8 years after the fire the squirrel is able to recolonize also the highly burned patches, actually using them more than moderate burned areas. If you want to know why... read it!
